AFC South

Jacksonville Jaguars

Coming off a 7-9 2009 campaign the Jaguars had many areas to address. Their aging defense needed help. They needed receivers to throw to. And then there is David Garrard. They definitely improved the defense, going out and getting Kirk Morrison to play middle linebacker. They also used three out of their first four draft picks on defensive lineman, including highly touted defensive tackle Tyson Alualu out of Cal with the tenth overall pick. However instead of adding to an already depleted group of receivers they allowed Tory Holt, to leave via free agency. Not that Holt was the receiver he was five years ago; but his 51 catches were still second best on the team. The Jaguars have put a lot of stock in second year wide-out Mike Thomas who became a favorite target for Garrard towards the end of the season. Another position to watch for Jacksonville is tight end. Incumbent starter Marcedes Lewis will need to step it up receiving or he might find himself on the bench behind Zach Miller. Miller, like Thomas, had a very impressive end to the 2009 season and will contend for catches. Garrard has been an interesting player his whole career. His strong arm and athleticism are undeniable but his decision making is questionable, at best. He was able to get into a groove with Mike Sims-Walker last year so look for that relationship to continue to grow. However, Jacksonville’s hopes run on three letters: M.J.D. Maurice Jones-Drew has become a top back in the league, rushing for nearly 1,400 yards last season. There is no doubt that Jones-Drew will continue to shine in the league, but the question is can anyone in Jacksonville take some of the burden off him. Prediction: 6-10, 4th in AFC South.

NFL Preview 2010: AFC West

Editor's Note: We continue our NFL Preview with the AFC West

San Diego Chargers

As expected, the Chargers rolled through the division in ’09 and were the hottest team in the league for the majority of the season. After starting 2-3, the Chargers rolled off 11 straight wins and earned a first round bye. Once again the team choked when it mattered most and lost in the divisional round to the red hot New York Jets. The problem, it seems, with the Chargers is a lack of mental toughness. The team always manages to have a stellar regular season record, but never manages to make it to the big dance. The team has stayed firm by the side of head coach Norv Turner. Perhaps releasing the biggest star to ever put on a San Diego Chargers uniform will help this team finally turn the corner?

The NFC West is arguably the worst division in football.  I only throw arguably in there because the AFC West is just as bad.  One thing is for sure though, The NFL west is the pits of football.

The Cardinals have won this division the past two years and they will not make it a third.  Since  Kurt “I’m clearly holding this team together” Warner and Anquan “Ouch-Face” Boldin have left town, I do not see this team winning more than 8 games.  So, who will it be then?  Who will rise from this division of less than mediocrity?  The San Francisco 49ers.

NFL Preview 2010: AFC North

It’s safe to say that no football expert predicted the Cincinnati Bengals would be coming into the 2010 season as the defending division champions. The Bengals took everyone by surprise last season by going 10-6 and astonishingly going 6-0 against their division opponents.  The AFC North is no pushover division. We are talking about 4 wins over the brutal Baltimore Ravens and the then-defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bengals took everyone by surprise in 2009; which is exactly why I do not believe they will repeat that success in 2010. Let’s take an in-depth preview of the AFC North as we are just days away from Opening Kickoff. Add a comment

Editor's Note: NFL Preview all week long as the NFL Season starts on Thursday.

Chicago Bears - The team hired pass friendly Mike Martz as the offensive coordinator. Does that mean Jay Cutler is going to throw more than last year? Cutler threw 555 passes last year. Only Brady, Peyton, and Schaub attempted more passes. Cutler was tied for 10th with completions. He also had 26 INT’s, 6 more than the 2nd place Dirty Sanchez with 20. So will a pass friendly Mike Martz help Cutler throw more? No. The most common thing I have read is that people saying Mike Martz wont help improve Cutler’s decision making. Which well yeah true he wont, but what he will do is offer new passing plays, which hopefully should result in more open targets for Cutler to hit. I truthfully expect to see Cutler have his best career year. He has a lot of targets in Knox, Hester, Bennett, Aromashodu, G-Reg Olsen. I mean how many people remember Az - Zahir Hakim. He posted fantastic stats in 99 and 00, considering the fact he was playing with Bruce, Holt, Faulk. I bring Hakim up, because I see Devin Hester being like that this season. Chicago signed Julius Peppers because their defense struggled big time last season, and it really needed to make some improvements. Yeah, well your defense might be hurting when you lose Brian Urlacher for the season in the first game. The division is tough. Chicago does not have an easy schedule. I predict The Bears to finish the season at 9 - 7.

We live in a world where ESPN sites tweets by athletes and columnists. Twitter has become a reliable source for news and entertainment for some. Then along came Washington Post columnist, Mike Wise. He simply tweeted: "Roethlisberger will get five games, I'm told."

Albert Haynesworth doesn't like to practice. Who does? Not Allen Iverson. But I can imagine the conversation in the locker room between Fat Albert and the trainers and his agent went something like this.
