Saturday night’s UFC event, held at the FedEx Forum, was a good look into the future of both the promotion’s lightweight and heavyweight divisions. All of the favorites on the main card won, and few even wound up interesting. The UFC, as a world class MMA production, seems to be running a bit stale as of lately. Headlining fights over the last few months have been one sided, lacking action, or unjustly scored. Can you remember the last time a title belt exchanged hands in the UFC? It was July 11th when Brock Lesnar defeated Frank Mir for the heavyweight title. Unable to fight due to illness, Lesnar has not defended his crown nearly half a year later, and won’t be fighting anytime soon. The middleweight belt has been held by Anderson Silva for more than 3 years now. There is nothing wrong with that, but can you name another UFC middleweight?

UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin II
Whether you love him or hate him, Tito Ortiz has helped build the UFC brand into the powerhouse it is today. Ortiz was originally managed by Dana White prior to their affiliation with UFC. He fought in his debut at UFC13 back in 1997, and has never looked back. Throughout the years, he has been dominant as a light heavyweight, becoming the longest reigning champion in the division to this day. Ortiz has fought some of the toughest men to ever enter the octagon, including Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Lyoto Machida, and Ken Shamrock. This man always puts on a show; win, lose, or draw. As much as this man is a legend, and as much as he has helped transform the sport, I can’t believe I am going to have to watch him fight again this Saturday.

Normally I would write an article recapping the UFC event from the previous night.Today I decided to go a different route. UFC 105 was so utterly boring, if I attempted to write it up, my words would be more exciting than the actual event. The last thing I want to do is put on a better production than Dana White (See Strikeforce or Dream on how this is done). Michael Bisping fought the fight of his life, and he is so widely hated outside of the UK; so ultimately nobody cares. Dan Hardy solidified his spot as the number one contender for GSP’s Welterweight title, by beating Mike Swick.

I wonder who Dana White was rooting for Saturday night in the Rogers vs. Fedor fight. I bet you it wasn’t Fedor. There is always the chance that the UFC will be able to get their hands on “The Last Emperor”, but these chances have only diminished over time. Dana has not exactly been an ambassador when dealing for Emelianenko. The UFC president just can’t afford to see Fedor win fights, just as the UFC cannot afford to be without the greatest fighter in the world. The Strikeforce card was a good one; more interesting than the recent UFC -104 pay-per-view circus on October 24th.

On November 7th, Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers will be held at the Sears Center and live on CBS. Co-promoted by Strikeforce and M-1 Global, this card should prove to be action packed and more exciting than recent events held by rival UFC. After the disappointing UFC 104 card, this is the perfect scenario for Strikeforce to gain followers. It also happens to be the first MMA event to be held on network television since Elite XC held its final production.
