Surprisingly, there is a lot I have to write about and I am doing my part to catch up with everything going on in my life. This wasn't even a thought for me when I sat down to write but when I saw this news it left me completely baffled.
For those who don't know. Jets head coach Rex Ryan was down in Miami for an MMA event and he made a statement that the Jets would beat the Dolphins twice next year and he was booed and heckled by all 3000 or so Dolphins fans (They do exist when they are relevant). So Rex Ryan decided to flip them the bird. A normal gesture by anyone who has nothing better to say and you can't really defend yourself when someone flips you off. I think Dane Cook once did a sketch on this, where the best you can do is flip them off with two fingers. Anyways some people looked down upon that, including the Jets who today fined him 50k.
The Jets did what?!
I don't understand this. The guy is part of the organization but anyone at anytime is bound to do something offensive or say something crude in the heat of the moment, but that is normal. This wasn't at a game or had nothing to do with the Jets so why are they sticking it to Rex Ryan? He did more for this organization then someone like Lane Kiffin could possibly do for any team of his with all his trash talk or any coach could do. Yet the Jets took offense to it.
I don't understand the Jets position. Show me one grown man who hasn't flipped the bird. Rex Ryan brings a positive attitude to the organization and has helped the NFL keep its largest market interested in the NFL come January. Rex Ryan apologized and we should all move on from that but the Jets tried making a point. A point that was uncalled for. I understand that when anyone is hired by a company they essentially represent that company even when they are away from work, but we can't be held accountable for everything we do or say when it is all in jest.
Regardless, Rex Ryan took the right action in apologizing and we should all move on from that. The Jets were not part of that group that could just move on. I don't even like the Jets but I have respect for Rex Ryan and the organization should too. 50k might not be a lot to some but it is still a hefty chunk of change. Handle the business in house and move on from it. He did nothing to the NFL or violate any conduct policy rather he was merely defending himself as any man would do in that situation. Are we supposed to look down on him for drinking in public, too?
Here's a double-bird salute to you, the Jets organization. You continue to offer up reasons on why you will never be at the top of the NFL.
