Mucho Macho Man

There are very few professional wrestlers that transcend their sport and become pop culture icons. In a profession that is never covered by sports television, radio, or newspapers it can be almost impossible to get that household name recognition beyond your core audience. Still, there are men who broke through that glass ceiling and earned the name recognition to even the most casual fans and non-fans of professional wrestling. One of those men was Randy Savage…or as he was better known to wrestling fans: “Macho Man” Randy Savage. He was a big part and reason for the huge wrestling boom in late 80s and early 90s. For wrestling fans in their mid-20s like myself, the “Macho Man” was a huge part of our childhoods. That’s why this past Friday on May 20th, 2011 it felt as if a piece of my childhood died when I heard the news of Randy Savage’s death. Savage apparently had a heart attack while driving and crashed his jeep into a tree. His wife suffered minor injuries, but the Macho Man did not make it.
