Super Bowl Recap

Welker DropWell that was interesting. I've felt this way before, but I'm more accustomed to the feeling in October, not January and February. When I was younger it was commonplace for the Red Sox to leave us hanging in dramatic fashion, coming so far, only to lose it near the end. Lately, the Patriots have taken on that role, whether it's the Divisional Playoff game or Super Bowl, the Patriots have left us gasping for air by nights end.

NFL Talk: Week 7 Review

(Editor's Note: Jeff stops flexing in the mirror to offer up his weekly NFL talk)

Rookies take the stage.

In NFL's week 7, there were plenty of young talents that impressed me. Before I get to Tebow acting like he's a God, I want to talk about Cam Newton and his development through the first seven weeks of the NFL season. Even though the Panthers beat a struggling Redskins team, Newton is starting to look like a confident NFL quarterback. With 59 yards rushing and a rushing TD, he has now tied the all-time record for a rookie QB in rushing touchdowns with 7 and that number, theoretically, will be doubled. That's quite impressive especially for a rookie to record a soon to be 14 rushing TD's. Newton can do more than run too it seems like. Going 18-23 passing with 256 yards is pretty accurate and tells a lot. His QB rating was through the roof at 127.5 which is remarkable. After seeing some of the completions from Newton he just looks like he has gained so much confidence and awareness on the field. He is about to emerge as a top quarterback in the next 3-5 years and there's no lying that he is silencing his critics.

NFL Talk: Week 6 Review

(Editor's Note: Jeff puts down the Whey Drink to lend us his thoughts on Week 6 in the NFL)

It was a pretty interesting week in the NFL especially for coaches. First, I wanted to start off with the Lions and 49ers matchup this week. Stafford clearly outplayed Alex Smith, hands down, and it looked all good for the Lions, except for the fact that the big defensive front for the Lions pretty much took the day off. Frank Gore ran where he wanted, and when he wanted, averaging around 9 yards a carry. These teams are pretty evenly matched and the player I was most impressed with was Michael Crabtree. As Jon Gruden would say, 'this guy' pulled down some catches that were terribly thrown and made some pretty big plays in crunch time. Calvin Johnson had a great game himself despite not being able to grab a pass for a TD. He racked up over 100 yards on only 7 catches; and that's considered a bad game for him.

NFL Talk: Week 5 Review

(Editor's Note: Introducing Jeff to the SortsofSports team. In between studying at Roger Williams and lifting weights, he has time to put together his thoughts.)

It was an interesting week in the NFL as I thought the Packers were going to lose their first game this season during the first half of the game. It was a tough loss for the Falcons, considering they were up 14-0 on the defending Superbowl champs late in the second quarter. Aaron Rodgers did not let his team get discouraged as he picked up the slack, throwing for almost 400 yards and 2 TD's. Also chipping in for a big game was Green Bay's receiver, James Jones, hauling in 5 receptions for 140 yards and a TD. Let's see if Rodgers can roll by the Rams at home next week to improve to 6-0.

NFL Quarter Season Review (plus one week)

Hard to believe we are already 5 weeks in and a quarter of the way through the 2011 NFL season, but that's how things work in football. We are in the midst of what already is a record-breaking season in terms of total offense and comebacks. The NFL is on pace to see offensive numbers the likes of which have never been seen before. Most of it has to do with the new kickoff rule. Now that the kickoff has been moved up from the 30 to 35 yard line, balls are flying out of the back of the end zone and forcing teams to start from their own 20 yard line. This is giving offenses more yards to work with, and when you factor in that defensive backs can't touch a wide receiver after 5 yards, you can see why the NFL is having these monster numbers and stat lines.

Oh Say Can You Sing?

Singing the National Anthem at any sporting event is an honor and a privilege. But singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl is a distinction bestowed upon only a select few. Whitney Houston. Barry Manilow (he’s awesome and you know it). Diana Ross. Christina Aguilera? Whoever suggested they hire the singer of the stripper anthem “Dirty” is definitely standing in the unemployment line this morning.

Chicago Fans Grin and Bear Jay Cutler

I'll start this column with a few words I may never say again Rick Reilly was right. In his latest attempt at journalism, Reilly questioned Jay Cutler's leadership and composure, among other intangible qualities.

Little LoLo's Lucky Pat's Panties

Editor's Note: Introducing Lo to the Sorts of Sports team.

As a girl, getting dressed for game day is always a challenge. Patriots’ sweatshirt? Brady jersey? Welker T-shirt? I swear, it’s harder than you think. However, amongst all the difficult Sunday morning decisions; where to watch or what to eat, there is one thing that always remains constant; I will be wearing my Lucky Pat’s Panties.
