Colts don't Suck for Luck

Colts LuckThe Colts win again and they are suddenly riding a 2-game winning streak. A team that was once considered to be the worst team ever, now, can't even be considered the worst team this season, and does that jeopardize their future? A lot of people assumed that they were sucking to get Andrew Luck, the likely #1 pick in the draft next year, and it seemed like a good idea with Peyton Manning's health, but if they are only kind of sucking, then is this season and every foreseeable season a waste as well? Not so fast.

The Colts are currently 2-13, with one game left against the equally pathetic, Jaguars, who sit at 4-10. Win, and the Colts improve to 3-13, which is very likely. Regardless, they can't fall (improve) to worse (better) than 3rd worst team this year. Meanwhile, St. Louis is 2-13 and they still have to play San Fransisco. Bottom line, the Colts' odds at getting the first pick in the draft are very slim now.

So with that being said, who will land Andrew Luck? The Colts say they will draft him if available, and it's becoming more and more obvious that they need him. Peyton is on the downward for his career and they need the next Aaron Rodgers to either come in and learn from a  Hall of Famer, or step right in and lead the team.

I'll go on record to say that every year a stud QB comes out and everyone says that "He" is the "one". Already looking to 2013, Matt Barkley will be the guy that everyone talks about. So looking at Andrew Luck as a guy who comes once every other decade is absurd to say.

We know the Rams will pass on Luck, but they could trade down. Would Minnesota be interested? I doubt it, especially after the life that Joe Webb showed, and they have Ponder. That leaves Jacksonville and Cleveland as the next two likely teams to want Luck. I could see Cleveland trading up in the draft with St. Louis. St. Louis needs a WR, and Greg Little just came off a decent rookie year with over 700 yards receiving. Package him with some draft picks, probaly 2 first rounders, and Luck could be going to the Browns.

What's more interesting, aside from Luck, is who will be coaching the Colts next year. We would assume that Jim Caldwell will be in there coaching again, but how is it possible that a team loses their QB and nearly goes winless. I look at week 17 as a must win situation for Caldwell if he wants to keep his job. If the Colts lose, I expect them to go after Bill Cowher to get in him and then trade up for Luck if they get the #2 pick. There is no reason why Caldwell should still have a job after only getting 2 wins in a season.

Again, I reiterate, Luck may be a bust. He didn't wow people this year and RG3 is also going to be a high choice, if he declares. RG3 does not have the build of Tebow or Newton, but can still mix things up. The NFL is a copycat league and with the likes of Mike Vick and Vince Young, RG3 can still produce. Keep an eye on him and the Colts moving forward, especially if they want to keep Peyton happy.
