Fantasy Football Preview: Quarterbacks

With the 2011 NFL season kickoff just around the corner, many fantasy football leagues are kicking it into high gear and having their drafts over the next 16 days. Yes folks, it's officially Fantasy Football Draft Season. Well it has been since the lockout ended, but for those of you who have not drafted yet; Sorts of Sports has you covered. We give you a look at who we believe will be the top 5 at the major positions as well as give you a sleeper to look out for. Don't worry you don't have to thank us now; but a box of chocolate chip cookies after you win your fantasy league will suffice.
Tom BradyQuarterbacks

1. Aaron Rodgers
Many of you may be shocked that Michael Vick is not at the top of this list. Rodgers may not be the best overall QB among his peers, but he works in an offense that is built for prime-time fantasy destruction. Rodgers' mobility gives him that extra dimension that Vick also has with rushing touchdowns. Rodgers will not only have his elite tight end back this season, but Ryan Grant's will add some semblance of a running game that could possibly make Rodgers even more dangerous. We fully expect Rodgers to be the number 1 fantasy QB again in 2011 when it's all said and done.
2. Philip Rivers
Why do we at SOS believe Rivers is more valuable than Michael Vick this season? Simple: Track-record. Rivers has been posting monster fantasy stats since he became a full-time starter in 2006. The stability the San Diego passing game has had over the years is all on Rivers' shoulders. With Vincent Jackson back for a full season at wideout, look for Rivers to improve on his numbers for a year ago.
3. Drew Brees
Brees perhaps may be the best pure passer of the upper echelon QB's. His consistency has always been there, but interceptions have been a worry over the past couple of seasons. A lot of those interceptions have to do with receivers tipping passes, but it still counts as -2 for the QB in the fantasy world. The Saints are expected to have a more physical running attack this season, so they may become a more balanced team. Some may think that would decrease Brees' numbers, but the offense still runs through Saint Brees. Feel better taking a guy like Brees over rolling the dice with Vick.
4. Tom Brady
Brady finished last season at the top of many major QB stat categories, but he hasn't been considered a top 3 fantasy QB since he went down in 08 with his knee injury. The Patriots loaded up with Chad Ochocinco at receiver this year and the team is hoping Brady can replicate what he and Randy Moss once had. Chad has a lot to prove after a few lackluster seasons in Cincy, so expect Brady and him to hook up a lot this season. The Pats still do not have a define run game, so Brady chucking the ball will still be the order of the day.
5. Michael Vick
Ahh there he is. You will find Vick as the number 1 fantasy QB in many magazines and major online publications. We know better here at Sorts of Sports. While Vick will put up monster numbers, he's almost guaranteed to miss about 3 to 4 games. I don't know about you, but I'd rather draft a QB where I don't have to worry about drafting a backup at all and filling my roster with backs and receivers. With Vick you almost HAVE to draft a capable backup. And that backup has to be a player that you would possibly want starting all season, because Vick style of play could lead to serious injury. Let's also not forget that Vick does not have a proven track record. He's had one monumental comeback season where he completely changed his style of play. Can he maintain that level in 2011? Only time will tell, but drafting Vick should come with a Buyer Beware tag.
Sleeper: Josh Freeman
We here at Sorts of Sports were high on Freeman last season. He proved he is a worthy NFL starter and finished 10th overall in fantasy QB's. WIth the emergence of a young offense that includes receiver Mike Williams, Freeman is poised to have a breakout season and let the rest of the country know who he is. If you're looking for a solid backup or like to wait on drafting a QB until late in the draft, Freeman will be a more than solid starter for 2011.
