New NBA Rules

The NBA released a statement that said technical fouls would come fast and furious this year. The point was to make players have respect for the NBA, much like the dress code was initiated five+ years ago. But has David Stern gone too far? Are the refs to blame?

On the contrary. I feel that the refs don't even agree with this rule. In fact, if you watch any preseason basketball, which I don't know why you would, but if you see highlights on ESPN, then you'd see that maybe the refs are making a mockery of this new deal. Here's what was released.

The explanation on what will warrant a technical under the new rules seemed straightforward enough, at least in an off-the-court setting. Any gestures toward an official (or even away from one) that are deemed to be overt or excessive will be grounds for a technical foul. This can include claps or "air-punches" as demonstrations of disagreement against a call, or even excessive discussions with a referee over the course of a game about a multitude of calls.

This has to be a joke right? Well I've see two extreme examples of players being ejected and it has put the media in a frenzy about the new rules. Do people pay to see superstars ejected in the second quarter? I'm under the assumption that the refs have banded together to follow this rule to a 'T' in order to show what kind of joke it is.

Take for example Kevin Garnett getting ejected last night versus the knicks. If you haven't heard Tommy Heinsohn blow up, youtube it. But then earlier this preseason Grant Hill and Reggie Evans got ejected for, playing grab ass? I didn't see that in the guidelines.

David Stern will soon realize that this is all wrong, and hopefully it will be changed. Hopefully. Can the refs save the game? We are relying on the refs to get together in secrecy and do something behind David Stern's back? My money is on the refs....
