Derek Jeter is not at tonight's All-Star game, due to being tired. I guess it is strenuous to be a baseball player. I assume it is tough to get a hit when the media is asking you on a consistent basis if 3,000 hits is on your mind? I'm not a baseball player but it seems like taking a private jet to Arizona would be difficult. I'm not that popular, so if millions of people voted for me to do something, the logical thing to do is to sit it out. I don't even know where to begin with Jeter.
What is so tough about spending your off day in Arizona, or any ballpark, just to make an appearance for those who pay to watch you? This is not just a slam at Jeter, because it happens every year, players back out to 'rest'. Rest for what? If you need the rest that badly, then sit out the Sunday before the All-Star game. Or sit out any game before an off day. There you have two days in a row with no play. I don't even care if you are reserve player in your 4th year as an All-Star, you go to the game.
Normally, I would say that the All-Star game is not a serious event, players don't have to go, but I'm tired of taking their side. It's not even that they get paid millions to play a game, because it is a job, it's just a matter of respecting the game. Sorry you're an All-Star. Sorry you are good enough to make the team and play with the best in the league. Sorry you get bonuses to play. Just show up and play your two innings and move on. Maybe you'll do something memorable and fans will like you from other cities because of your big hit late in the game. Maybe you're seen more marketable for future employment. Maybe you might have some fun?
Jeter, you're soft. But you can't win in this battle. If you show up, you'll be ridiculed for participating when people say you don't belong. Don't show up, and people will call you selfish. It'll be a hit on your reputation either way, but how you respond after will show your true colors. That is when you will become a true Yankee. Deal with adversity, become hated, and prove people wrong. You're Mr. Captain or whatever, but you're not hated. Congrats on dealing with your first bit of adversity. Now do something about it. Prove us wrong and hit .300 in the second half of the year. Play for 5 more years and go to another All-Star game. Set an example, don't cower away from the attention.
