(Editor's Note: Introducing Dooley to the SOS team. He's a Philly homer, so take it easy on him.)
The Philadelphia Phillies are in the postseason for the fifth consecutive year and are on pace to set the franchise record for regular season wins. The Phillies only have two plus 100 win seasons in their history, the last coming in 1977. But Phillies fans would agree that anything short of another World Series Championship would be unsatisfactory. The Phillies were the favorites to win the 2011 World Series after signing Cliff Lee in December 2010. Along with Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, Roy Oswalt, and surprise rookie Vance Worley, the Phillies boast the fiercest starting rotation going into the playoffs.

So it’s the most important game of the summer, who cares? So, Baseball takes its weeklong vacation and will return on Friday. So let’s take this time to review the first half of baseball. The Red Sox went into the break atop of the American League with a 55 – 35 record sporting the best offense in baseball outscoring the next closest team by 25 runs (Texas is 25 runs behind and they have played 2 more games). The Sox have just been pouring it on lately. After an awful start, and I mean awful, this team did not hit .500 until May 15thwhen they reached 20 – 20. Since that point, they have gone 35 – 15. Even throughout their 20 – 20 slump they were scoring 4.325 runs per game. Since then? 6.18 runs per game.

Derek Jeter is not at tonight's All-Star game, due to being tired. I guess it is strenuous to be a baseball player. I assume it is tough to get a hit when the media is asking you on a consistent basis if 3,000 hits is on your mind? I'm not a baseball player but it seems like taking a private jet to Arizona would be difficult. I'm not that popular, so if millions of people voted for me to do something, the logical thing to do is to sit it out. I don't even know where to begin with Jeter.

Every year, 'experts' say how the fans shouldn't vote because it is always a popularity contest when it comes to All-Star games and how the fans always screw up a few names and how ultimately that leads to All-Star snubs. Well, I'm here to congratulate the fans, not for their selections, but rather for their omittances. Often we don't give fans enough credit, but I'd like to congratulate them for avoiding picking two players.

The Boston Red Sox are doing a huge injustice to David Ortiz, thus they won't come close to winning the World Series. The Sox are in the midst of a 1-5 streak against the National League. They have played San Diego, Pittsburgh, and now Philadelphia, and they look really bad. Maybe it is because their 5-8 batters are hitting .122, .239, .149, and .277. Oh forget the World Series, these guys might miss the playoffs.

Interleague play starts up this weekend in Major League Baseball and one of the headline acts is when the Chicago Cubs visit the Boston Red Sox for the first time in 93 years. It was the 1918 World Series when these two teams last met at Fenway Park during Game 6. It's weekend's like this that remind me how great the game can be. Unfortunately, I am slowing becoming part of the minority when it comes to those who enjoy interleague play.

Not to steal the term, but the AL Central is a true wildcard. When you look back at this division over the past 9 years, you can see that Minnesota has dominated, winning the title 6 times. Chicago took the title twice while Cleveland was able to snatch one AL Central title in ‘07 before fading back into nonexistence. This year, I believe we will see a changing of guard as the Detroit Tigers have what it takes to jump up and snatch the division. That doesn’t mean they will be the only team at the dance, Minnesota will not be far behind and can grab the wildcard spot for the AL. Here is how it will all break down.

It has been nearly two depressing months since the Packers defeated the Steelers in the Super Bowl. February is notoriously the worst month for sports fans (except in Olympic years and frankly even then, it usually sucks). Speaking of the Super Bowl, who knows when the next time we might see one of those is; thanks to the unfathomable greed of the owners and players, alike…

Editor's Note: The season starts today, we continue our MLB Preview with the AL WEST
First: Athletics (88-74)
Oakland has quietly rebuilt itself quite nicely – there’s a new “Big Four” in town, the lineup is well balanced from top to bottom (and adheres to Moneyball strategy) and the bullpen is deep. Plus you get Andrew Bailey back at some point. And is Rich Harden actually on the Athletics again? He’s on the DL too, but if there’s one place he’ll magically find himself, it’s Oakland. This is a chaotic division, and when that happens, you have to take the most well balanced team available. That’s the A’s.
