The trade talks are heavy this time of year in the Majors with Carlos Beltran leading the way. Beltran is having a solid year with 14 HR and 59 RBI while batting .293. Impressive numbers for any Mets player, aside from Jose Reyes. The Mets have their financial issue of their own to deal with so if they can find a way to dump even $1 of salary and get something in return they will gladly do it. It's not as if they were thinking they could win this year or anytime thereafter, right?
He could come in and help a team this year, without a doubt, but is he worth anything more than three months? Let's take a look at three blind resumes.
Player A: 831 Games, .280 BA, .367 OBP, 148 HR, 552 RBI (21 HR, 79 RBI / season)
Player B: 818 Games, .270 BA, .379 OBP, 115 HR, 422 RBI (16 HR, 60 RBI / season)
Player C: 889 Games, .279 BA, .347 OBP, 114 HR, 487 RBI (16 HR, 70 RBI / season)
Let's just say that neither Player A nor B is worth the millions of dollars that they are getting but is Player A that much better? Is Player C that much worse? I'd probably take Player C for half the price. For the sake of this argument, Player C is batting .298 with 14 HR and 46 RBI this season.
Are you losing much by keeping Player B? This year you might be, considering Player B is batting .223, 4 HR, 22 RBI. But otherwise, you got what you paid for in today's day and age, unless you got Player C, then you got a little bit more for half the price. The point I'm trying to make is that Carlos Beltran isn't worth more than any other average outfielder, and it just so happens that he is the only one people are talking about. But there are names like Coco Crisp and Josh Willingham who can provide the same bang for far less buck. Whomever gets stuck with Beltran just got duped into a lot of nothing special.
Thanks to JD Drew and Michael Cuddyer for participating in this experiment.
